It looks like British holidaymakers could finally be enjoying a summer in the sun after Greece announced its intention to open borders by as early as May 14.
Foreign tourists who have been vaccinated, recovered from Covid-19 or who test negative before they arrive will be welcome in the southern European hotspot. Thanks to rapid testing, those who do test positive can be immediately quarantined, hopefully allowing the country to control the spread of the virus.
Boosting the post-Covid economy
Athens is looking to boost the Greek economy, which like that of most nations has taken a major hit during the pandemic. Plans will also be put in place to ensure that all airport staff and hotel employees are vaccinated before the expected influx of visitors.
In the UK, foreign travel will be banned until at least May 17.
The Greek government will trial the scheme in April with a pilot scheme for travellers from the EU. Visitors will be expected to wear face masks in all public places, and the tourism minister, Harris Theocrasis, says plans are subject to change depending on developments in the virus.
Cyprus opens its doors to tourists
The announcement followed hot on the heels of Cyprus, where officials said that travellers from Britain would be allowed on the island from May 1. All arrivals will need to have received both doses of the vaccine at least seven days before travelling.
Tourists will also be expected to observe social distancing, wear a mask in public places and be tested at random, even if they’ve been vaccinated.
Tourists from EU member states are already allowed to travel to Cyprus after the borders were opened on March 1. A colour coded system is in place where travellers from red or orange countries must undergo a PCR test and quarantine until the results are received.
Other countries waiving quarantine for those with the so-called ‘vaccination passport’ are the Seychelles, Romania and Thailand.
